How to Make a Living Wall

Melissa Johnson · July 22, 2020 ·

Bringing the Outdoors In

Green spaces are showing up in the most unusual places these days. Once thought to be a wall feature for restaurants or fancy hotels is now making its way into living rooms, bathrooms, and kitchens.

A living plant wall is a great way to introduce greenery into your home, add interesting texture, patterns and create a modern and sophisticated look.

Beautiful and Healthy

Not only are living plant walls beautiful, they also can create a few health benefits as well. Depending on the size of your plant wall and the type of plants, it is said having house plants are a natural way to clean the air in your home. Some plant wall enthusiasts have created entire herb gardens to have fresh ingredients for cooking. The direction you take your plant wall are endless – Herb garden, flower show, succulent masterpiece, or a creeping vine, you determine how big or small you create the space. The best part is making a living wall is easy, too!

How to Make a Living Plant Wall

1. Choose your space

You can build a living plant wall on any solid wall wooden wall like a single fence panel, lattice panel, or even an old rod iron fence. Securing your wall into a planter with wheels attached allows you the freedom to move it from room to room.

2. Screw in the planters

Once you’ve chosen a structurally sound wall or fence, simply screw in rows planters or plant containers of your choice. Remember to use a level so your planters are straight or looking for a more whimsical look, scatter the planters around the structure in a pattern of your choice.

3. Start Watering

Starting at the top, water your wall with a hose, watering can, or spray bottle. Since your wall is on wheels you can wheel it outside every 3-4 weeks to give it a nice thorough drink of aqua.

A bathroom is a perfect spot for a moss plant wall.
Keep it simple with funky shelves and individual plants.
A herb garden wall in the kitchen would be fun, too!
