How to Unclog a Toilet

Melissa Johnson · November 8, 2020 ·

Even with a bathroom view like this a clogged toilet is just gross!

How to unclog a toilet when nothing seems to work.

Not my favorite subject, but let’s face it, bathrooms need to be cleaned. Especially if you have a clogged toilet. Gross!

Here are a few tips if you find yourself with a clogged toilet and nothing seems to work:

Is this tile work gorgeous or what? But it doesn’t changed the fact that a clogged toilet is gross!

HOT WATER– Heat water on the stove and remove it BEFORE it starts to boil. DO NOT ADD BOILING WATER. Pour it in the toilet and let it sit for a few minutes to see if it loosens the clog. You’ll know if your efforts were successful if you see the water start to drain.

DISH SOAP – If the hot water didn’t work and you need to kick things up a notch, grab some dish soap from the kitchen. Squeeze a 1/4 cup into the toilet bowl. Let the soap sit for 5-10 minutes. Then, add hot water (again, not boiling) let it sit for a few minutes. This should do the trick, but if not…

VINEGAR & BAKING SODA – My all time favorite household items, VINEGAR & BAKING SODA! You’ll need to empty some of the water if it’s filled to the brim. Then pour 1cup of baking soda and 1cup of vinegar down the toilet drain. The combination, will bubble up and hopefully loosen the clog. Wait 30 minutes, pour some hot water and see if it drains. If it doesn’t, REPEAT the process once more.

All the gold finishes cannot deflect from the fact that a clogged toilet is still gross!

TOILET BRUSH – If you don’t have a plunger and as gross as this is, you can use your toilet brush to try to get things moving. Simply angle the brush with the bristles down and pump it a few times like you would with a plunger. This, along with the above efforts, should get things moving.

CLOTHES HANGER – Again, if you do not have a plunger or a toilet snake, you can unwind a clothes hanger to try to snake out the clog. Be careful to not scratch the porcelain or get the hanger snagged. Using the straightest part of the hanger will help prevent this from happening.

Unfortunately, if all these efforts and you still find yourself with a clogged toilet, it’s time to call in the professionals. At least you’ll know you’ve exhausted every measure to get the toilet unclogged.

Got any fun bathroom tips. Don’t keep them a secret. Leave a comment below.
